Let me start by sharing my opinion. Throughout my pregnancy I would watch commercials on hulu (my husband and I are too cheap to have cable. lol) and there would be ones on formula. Now I had already decided on what I was going to do. I am all about natural 100%. I believe that God has made us perfect. He made no mistake in our bodies or the Earth. It is pesticides and human made items like plastic and artificial items that has tampered with all things perfect and that of which He created. So, I was going to breast feed from the start whether it killed me or not. I believe that it is something God ordained for a mother and child to do. Breastmilk is so perfectly created for the child. It has the perfect consistency for the child, nutrients, calories, and on top of that it offers the chance for the mother and child to bond. When my son takes his first sip of milk his eyes roll in the back of his head because he is in heaven - he has been given exactly what he needed and wanted. Formula cannot match the bond of breast to baby nor can they match the nutrients. Why is that they are always saying it is almost as good as breastmilk? Because it can't match it and definitely cannot beat it. Now am I saying I condemn you for not doing it.... no. What I am saying is that you can't make excuses. Formula is great because of the fact that if a mother dies or is in critical condition - the baby will survive. But, before there was formula all babies were breast fed. It was until women saw it as an inconvenience that it was stopped. If a mother was injured and couldn't feed her baby then another mother would help out and feed the woman's baby for her. It's not gross, it's natural.
So -- now onto my theory.
I have read that when babies are given formula they often weigh more than breastfed babies. They are given the same caloric intake each day and increased with the age of the baby. Also, formula NEVER changes.
Breastmilk is the opposite. It increases as the baby increases naturally. Also, the caloric intake changes. I have pumped milk that has had very little fat while other times pumped and there was more fat that I knew what to do with. What does that mean? More calories. Breast milk adapts to what the baby needs. When my son feeds more or cluster feeds, he increases my milk supply, which increases how much I eat. I remember just a couple of days ago -- my son was cluster feeding alllllllllllll day (which is VERY tiring!) and when he wasn't feeding I was stuffing my face. I still lost weight the next day. Your body goes with whatever the needs of the baby are.
I believe in this theory because of the following:
1. Have you seen how much a baby drinks in forumula?! I'm sorry but my girls would have a hard time holding that much in there! They are big but not THAT big!
2. As said before I have pumped and seen a difference in fat content. Each were pumped at the same stage (End of a feeding) so it's not like they were different stages of breastpumping.
I am pretty amazed at what God has created. He has made a woman perfectly and wonderfully made not only in a general sense but to keep a little human being alive! AMAZING!
I am probably wrong but in my little world it is correct! :)
