I did a little test on myself for about a week seeing if eating all an all natural ingredient ice cream at night made me gain weight, lose weight, or stay the same. Each time I had ice cream I had a normal amount (1 cup give or take) and a banana sliced long ways in half.
I love ice cream and especially ice cream with chocolate chunks or fudge in it. If I buy vanilla ice cream it is because I am adding an all natural ingredient fudge in with it, a banana, and a small amount of macadamia nuts with it. I wasn't joking when I said I was a chocolate addict.
So, each day I of course ate healthy.

Test #1: Ate ice cream during the day (so I could burn the calories off throughout the rest of the day!)
I lost weight the next day but I also walked 5 miles that day (not on purpose). It made me feel good that I could have my guilty pleasure that turns out wasn't so guilty! But, do know, if you eat 1/4 - 1/2 a carton of ice cream that probably won't work out so well. Add a banana to it to bulk it up! That and 1 cup of ice cream - you are golden!
Test #2: Didn't eat any.
I didn't lose any weight the next day (and I also didn't walk 5 miles either... or really any feet for that matter). You can lose it if you don't try to!
Test #3: At ice cream at the end of the day.
I lost a little weight but not much to really brag about...well ok, I am going to brag because any weight lost is FREAKING AWESOME! (sorry, had to give you some dork!) I walked a little bit (not 5 miles) but I did do some walking.
Verdict:
Ice Cream is not terrible as long as you do it the right way. Here are some tips:
1. Opt for all natural ingredients.
-Each time I go to the grocery store I read the ingredients. I don't care if the tag is brown (for natural); I don't trust them and check myself each time. My ruling is: If I can't read it, don't know what it is, or it has some chemistry suffix or prefix as they say in show business, "FORGET ABOUT IT!" Milk, Sugar, Chocolate... Yeah that is what should be in there. I do not buy anything with artificial sugars, artificial flavors, artifical colorings, anything that is fake or manufactured on a large scale science chemistry set. I go for all natural 100% of the time. If it isn't grown on God's green Earth I refuse to buy it.
2. Don't eat it all.
-If you are going to eat ice cream everyday to almost everyday (like me) don't pig out! Take a reasonable portion (1/2, 3/4, 1 cup) and add a banana or strawberries (whatever fruit you like - I only like bananas) and enjoy. It is ok to enjoy ice cream and not feel guilty about it, but it's when you eat 1/4 to 1/2 the carton that the guilt should start coming in.
3. Exercise a little bit
-I'm not saying run a marathon or walk 5 miles (like I did on accident). Just take a nightly stroll for 20 minutes with your dog, husband, and/or child(ren). You don't have to speed walk either. Just enjoy the weather and company.
Ice cream is not Cruella Deville (101 Dalmations) as long as it is taken in as a luxury not a meal.
Also, I don't have ice cream everyday. If you find yourself needing ice cream everyday you might have a sugar addition. Keep your eyes open with that because it can turn into something terrible!
